How to get started with strength training.

You want to feel strong but are asking yourself – where to even start? I get the feeling of overwhelm. It is totally normal and expected! First, keep it basic and simple and don’t overthink it. Don’t start with crazy movement patterns, heavy weight or following something you saw on Instagram.

Remember:

You are not fragile……

You do not need to be afraid…..

You simply need education and a good plan to follow….

Like most things “just start” (well once you educate yourself and have a solid plan to follow) and don’t be afraid to fail, that is how we learn! Start with the basic movement patterns like squat, push, pull, hinge and carry. Focus on keeping the correct form as well as appropriate bracing (new blog post coming up). Your amount of weight lifted isn’t important (hello ego lifting) the correct form is key to prevent injury.

Once you have correct form (make sure you study and learn and don’t be afraid to film yourself to review) then you can slowly add weight, increase your reps or your sets. Once you have the basics down you can slowly add in different variations and more complex movement patterns to the mix.

You will need a program to follow to keep it simple and help you get started safely. There are lots of programs out there to purchase on google or someone you follow on social media. So get after it. If you feel like you need 1:1 support or the gym atmosphere is just not your thing yet. No worries I got you! That is what I am here for.

Be excited to get started, learn all that you can and be a student! Learn about why you are doing what you are doing, how your body responds, how to avoid overtraining and listen to your body. The good news is gains will come easier since you are new to training. No, you won’t be slinging heavy weights but you will be having fun so enjoy the process of getting stronger!
